What Is Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score from 0 to 100 that estimates how hard it would be to rank on the first page of Google for a given keyword. The score is based on factors like the authority and backlink profiles of currently ranking pages. A KD of 20 means a relatively new site could rank with good content, while a KD of 80 means you'll need a strong domain with quality backlinks.

How to Use the Keyword Difficulty Checker

Enter up to 10 keywords, one per line, and click Check Difficulty. The tool returns a difficulty score alongside search volume and competition data for each keyword. This helps you decide which keywords are realistic targets based on your site's current authority.

  • Start with keywords scoring under 30 if your site is newer or has fewer than 50 referring domains.
  • Use difficulty alongside search volume — a KD 25 keyword with 2,000 monthly searches is a better bet than a KD 70 keyword with 5,000.
  • Check difficulty before writing content to avoid investing time in keywords you can't realistically rank for yet.
  • Revisit high-difficulty keywords as your site grows — terms that were out of reach six months ago may become viable.

What Factors Determine Keyword Difficulty?

The primary factor is backlinks — specifically, how many quality backlinks the top-ranking pages have. Domain authority, content quality, search intent match, and page-level optimisation also play a role. A keyword dominated by Wikipedia, government sites, and major publications will have a much higher difficulty score than one where smaller niche sites rank.
