Glossary

SEO terms, defined properly.

Short definitions of the terms that come up in real client conversations, written so they are useful rather than padded. Where the honest answer is that something matters less than the industry claims, it says so.

LLM SEO

Also called Generative engine optimisation, GEO, AI search optimisation, AEO

LLM SEO is the practice of getting a page cited inside the answers large language models give, rather than only ranked in a list of links. It covers how a page is written, how it is structured, whether AI crawlers can reach it, and whether the brand exists as a recognised entity elsewhere on the web.

On-page SEO

Also called On-site SEO

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself: the content and how well it answers the query, the title and meta description, the heading structure, internal links, images and structured data. It is distinct from technical SEO, which concerns the site, and off-page SEO, which happens elsewhere.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the work that lets search engines and AI crawlers reach and understand a site. It covers crawlability, indexation, site speed, mobile rendering, canonicals, redirects, sitemaps, structured data and URL structure. It rarely wins rankings on its own, but it reliably stops a site from ranking when it is wrong.

Off-page SEO

Also called Off-site SEO

Off-page SEO is everything outside your own site that affects how search engines and AI models judge it. In practice that means links from other sites, unlinked brand mentions, reviews, and presence in the third-party sources both search engines and language models draw on. Links remain the largest component.

SEO analytics

Also called Search analytics, SEO measurement

SEO analytics is the measurement of what organic search produces for a business. Done properly it connects a search query to a session, a session to an enquiry, and an enquiry to revenue. Done badly it reports rankings and sessions, which cannot tell you whether the work paid for itself.
